Universities You Should Visit While in Europe
While staying in Europe, there are tons of things to see. The key is to narrow down the list of sites you want to see, to a manageable list. One of the must-see types of sites to visit in the city, are the various universities located there. But which university in Europe are worth visiting? Here are some of the most prominent ones that will make your European vacation complete:
1. Cambridge University.
Cambridge is the UK's second oldest university, and the fourth oldest university throughout Europe. The school was founded around 1209, by disgruntled scholars who had left Oxford University. Both schools have been historical rivals since then. Cambridge has remained the epitome of excellence, producing alumni who have won nearly 90 Nobel prizes.
2. Complutense University of Madrid.
This university is one of the world's oldest universities, and often ranks as Spain's top university. In particular, schools that rank nationally include Psychology, History, Philosophy, Sociology, and Pharmacy. The school was founded in 1293, when King Sancho IV of Castile created it. It was later converted into a full university. By the 1509-1510 academic year, Complutense University included five faculties: arts and Philosophy, Canon Law, Medicine, Philology, and Theology. Today, the school has about 86,000 students, and 11,100 staff members.
3. ETH Zurich.
ETH Zurich is consistently ranked as one of the top universities throughout Europe and the world. It's the sister institution of EPFL, and is directly under Switzerland's Federal Department of Home Affairs. The Swiss Confederation founded EH Zurich in 1854. Initially, the school contained six departments: architecture, chemistry, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, forestry, and a "catch-all" department. Today, ETH Zurich has about 15,100 students and 9,000 staff members.
4. Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU).
Founded in 1755, MSU is Russia's largest university and perhaps the oldest Russian university. It is also often considered as the most prominent university in Russia. Today, the school has about 43,000 students and 4,000 staff members. Several schools have split off from MSU, and have themselves established solid reputations.
5. Tampere University of Technology (TUT).
This is the second largest university in Finland that specializes in engineering sciences. The objectives of the university are to provide a high level of education, and to conduct outstanding research. The focus of the school is on applied science, and often has close affiliations with companies such as Nokia. Like all other universities in Finland, the government funds TUT. The school became an independent school in 1972. At the beginning of 2010, the school became one of two universities in Finland that operate via foundations. It currently has about 14,000 students.
