A Shopaholic's Diary in Seville

As soon as our Seville hotel room was booked, with big thanks to the Internet for the ease and convenience of doing so, we immediately proceeded to scout out the best shopping places in the city.  After all, there is always nothing like being in the thick of things when it comes to getting our shops on.

Siesta in the Middle of Shopping

And so we proceeded to the recommended shopping areas only to find out that, indeed, in Spain we truly are! The shops were closed from around 2 until 5 in the afternoon, no thanks to the Spanish siesta in effect.  Everything just seemed to stand still and we had no choice but to calm the shopping beasts within us.  So, for shoppers out there, take note that most shops in Seville will open at 9 AM to 2 PM and then close for the siesta, after which business hours are again from 5 to 8 in the evening.

Other stores are open until 10 in the evening but it seems that the evenings are reserved for tapas and friends and so shopping is relegated to the background.  Also, you have to consider that there are no 24-hour stores in Seville although there are stores open until 3 in the morning in case you get the hankering for sweets after barhopping.

Sales Seasons

Well, of course, we found sales events in the shopping venues of Seville in addition to the haggle-friendly flea markets and street shops.  But for the better deals in the city, the best times are during the official sales period of January through February and then July through August.

Said months are often preceded by so much hype although when the time does come, the deals are not necessarily better than in other months.  Just be sure to be the wily, wise and prudent shopper that you are in your home, which we did, and you should be alright.

Shopping Centers

One of the beauties of shopping in Seville is that there are distinct shopping centers for just about everything that you wish to find in the city.  The main shopping center is in the streets of Tetuan and Sierpes along with the numerous side streets, all of which offer a cornucopia of trendy and traditional goods from men's, women's and children's clothing and shoes, accessories and jewelry, sporting goods, ceramics and other touristy stuff.

Well, the fact that you can get away from the oppressive heat of Seville was the main reason we stayed in the malls.  Other than that, we would not have missed the open air markets and flea markets, where the pulse of the city was a living, breathing and writhing mass of people jostling for space to ogle the wares on sale.

We were not disappointed with the wares like the Latin American Latin American crafts, necklaces, scarves, and sunglasses as well as pirated music and movies.  Usually, the best days are on Sundays although these open air markets just seem to pop up like mushrooms especially when the police are nowhere to be seen.

Truly, if we were made to do Seville again, we probably would if only for the great variety of shopping choices available, never mind the heat.  Then again, they have the siesta to beat it so the heat was nothing when you are enjoying your finds.
