No Comps in Copenhagen

If you are one for having your shopping sprees compliments of the boutiques ala celebrities, don't expect it to happen in Copenhagen.  Like it or not, you have to pay for your purchases that, when you come to think of it, is better for everyone involved.  Besides, just in case you have forgotten, you are in the country where the term going Dutch is a time-honored tradition!

Store Hours and Days

Fortunately, the store hours in Copenhagen are sufficiently short so as to prevent anybody from shopping till they drop from exhaustion or shopping till the credit card maxes out.  During weekdays, stores are usually open from 10 in the morning to 7 in the evening at the latest while Saturdays have considerably shorter hours at 9 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon.

You can rest your credit card on Sundays from shopping for clothes and personal accessories since only the florists, bakeries and souvenir shops are open for business.  But if you are really dead-set on shopping during Sundays, then we suggest going to Copenhagen on the 8 Sundays that shops are allowed to open, of which the 4 Sundays before Christmas Day is included.

Before going on said shopping spree the Dutch way, we strongly suggest booking one of the best Copenhagen hotels online days before landing in Copenhagen. Keep in mind that the city is Denmark's shopping capital, which means that hundreds of thousands of fellow shoppers will be crowding the streets, shop and hotels. Find here the best hotel accommodations and enjoy your stay in this amazing city.

Stores Galore

Now, we suggest that you wear your sturdy shoes and most comfortable clothing when shopping in Copenhagen.  With the sheer variety of shopping options in the city, you will be in a dizzy as to where to start your retail therapy first.

Well, we suggest going checking out the main shopping districts of Copenhagen ranging from the air-conditioned department stores and shopping malls to the al fresco atmosphere of the flea markets and the street shops.  So, are you ready to shop the Dutch way?

First, we suggest going to the department stores for the latest in international fashion, home design and other consumerist goods given the unique Dutch treatment.  Of course, the frenetic activity rivals that even of London and New York but with friendlier undertones to the ambience.  Just remember that when shopping season comes on, you will have to jostle with the crowds.

Stores can be found along the Strøget & Købmagergade streets with virtually hundreds lining the sides.  Did you know that Strøget is Europe's longest shopping street, too?  Yes, that is how varied the choices are in Copenhagen.  And that is not even taking into account the side streets branching off Strøget where a cornucopia of clothes, jewelry and antiques can be found.

Now, for some adventure in haggling and meeting the Dutch in their al fresco element, we suggest the flea markets like the Gammel Strand Flea Market.  These are great places to just stroll around, look at the goods being sold and just absorb the Dutch smells, sights and sounds you would not experience in the air-conditioned enclaves of the department stores and shopping malls.

Just remember the rule in Copenhagen - pay for your own purchases!  Other than that, you can shop till you drop from exhaustion and the weight of your purchases on your arms and credit card bills.
