Berlin Guide
  - Thursday 28 January 2010

Ich bin ein Berliner (Especially Where Shopping Is Concerned)

Every Berliner will tell you that, despite the dark past brought on by the Second World War and its infamous demagogue, they are proud of their city, of their heritage and of their lives.  You will see that their pride is warranted once you visit the city, experience the sights and sounds, and shop in its many shops and stores.

Well, of course, you will enjoy Berlin more if and when you have a holiday apartment Berlin reserved in your name.  You are well advised to do so via the online method as this is the fastest, easiest and most convenient way to book your Berlin accommodations

Reasonable Prices and Hours

One of the foremost reasons Berliners are proud of their shopping scene are the reasonable prices of the goods in the city, even those of designer labels.  You will not faint from the extravagantly, many will say ridiculously, high price tags on the products because Berlin laws in particular and German policies in general ensure that the cost of living in the city is one of the most reasonable in Europe.

We suggest trooping to the malls for the best bargain across a wide range of products and services.  Or if you want to go on the designer route, well, there are the specialty boutiques of the international labels to max out your credit cards.

Or your euro and Deutschmark in your wallet, for that matter.  Deutschmark, you ask?  Well, if you still have Germany's old currency in your pocket, don't throw them away as many shops still accept them and the Bundesbank changes them into euros.

Yet another reason to be proud of are the better business hours for the shops.  Where shops had arcane hours, nowadays many of the stores are open for 24 hours a day except on Sundays and public holidays.  Opening hours are anywhere from 8 in the morning until 8 in the evening so you basically have half of the day to go shopping and the rest to engage in barhopping and sleeping.

Range of Shopping Choices - Something to Be Even Prouder Of

In recent decades, Berlin has generated its own sense of fashion and style that has lead many a Berliner to adopt them as proudly as can be.  Today, there are many boutiques that cater to just about every fashion taste possible.

For high-end fashion choices, head on to the Kurfürstendamm and Tauentzienstrasse, home to all the most famous designer labels this side of Europe and the world.  Then hop on to the Uhlandstrasse and Bleibtreustrasse as well as Hackescher Markt for the avant-garde fashion that Berlin designers have to shock, er, offer the world.  Affordable and yet trendy fashion can be found at the Kempinski Plaza.

But of course, East Berlin has something to offer, too.  The Unter den Linden and Friedrichstrasse are the most stylish in the area boasting luxury fashion houses and giving a run for its money the Kurfürstendamm.

And then there are art pieces and antique items of the barn district formally known as the Scheuenviertel.  You can buy many things of value from the studios and galleries that can grace your walls back home.

Truly, Berlin makes you wish you were born in the city. But since that privilege cannot be had by all, well, you can always take a piece of Berlin with you.
