Shopping Binges in Beijing

Take Heed of Shopping Conventions

Beijing may be an increasingly cosmopolitan city but do take note that there are still parts of the city that are very much traditional in character.  As such, it pays to take heed of the shopping conventions in the city so as to make your shopping experience a truly pleasant one. 

You can haggle for lower prices but only in the flea and open-air markets, never in department stores.  You might be harassed into buying something you have no use for, in which case, you should adopt a friendly but firm attitude - shouting will embarrass the Chinese who are nig on saving face.  Better yet, do try to learn a few words of Chinese even if it is just to say "how much", "hello" and "thank you".  It also pays to press the hands together and bow your head when showing your gratitude for the bargain. 

When you can be friendly with the Chinese, you will find that their reputation as one of the most enterprising peoples on Earth is well-deserved.  You will be given excellent service in the name of making a sale. 

 

Take Note of Shopping Hours

You may want to go on shopping binges day and day out but the shopping hours are not conducive for such a noble - or as cheapskates will have it, wasteful - aim.  Shopping hours are from 8:30 in the morning to 9:30 in the evening.  It's not 24-hour shopping convenience but close enough especially when you do have to make use of the hotel room you booked over the Internet. 

You can use all your international credit cards as well as local and dollar currencies in the shops in Beijing.  With ATMs spread throughout the city, you should have no problem withdrawing money when and where you need it. 

 

Take Note of Shopping Centers

The best thing about shopping in Beijing is that it does not just have a wide array of goods to purchase but a truly mind-boggling one!  This is the city where millions of people live in and it comes as no surprise that there is always something for somebody no matter how eclectic, how eccentric and extreme their tastes may be.

Each of the shopping districts of Beijing caters to a certain market, which makes shopping so much easier.  Thus, you have the Liulichang Culture Street for antiques, calligraphy and paintings; Panjiayuan Market for old arts and crafts; Xiushui Street for the finest silk products; Yaxiu Clothes Market for your clothing needs and Beijing Hongqiao Market for its seafood, just to name a few of the numerous shopping districts in the newest shopping mecca in the block.
