Accommodating Accommodations in Europe
Europe holds a special place in the pantheon of human history. It is the birthplace of Western civilization, it played a predominant role in world politics and conquest since the beginning of the Vikings, and it is an emerging economic, social, cultural and political powerhouse.
With such an illustrious past, a modern present and a glorious future, it comes as no surprise that Europe is one of the most visited, if not, the most visited, continent in the world. European countries are always ready to receive visitors from other European nations as well as from all over the world.
There are plenty of options, too, from the apartments and inns to the hotels and hostels and even convents. Choose according to your budget but try to book in advance preferably through the Internet since you want to ensure that you have a place to stay as soon as you arrive in the city.
Apartments and Cottages
Amongst all the choices in accommodations, holiday apartments are probably the best option for many reasons. For one thing, you can accommodate a large group of persons at considerably lower prices compared to booking luxury hotels. And since most holiday apartments have full-service kitchen, you can save on the costs of dining out.
For another thing, you will have the privacy of a second home as well as the benefit of living like a local. After all, the best way to enjoy the local culture is to actually become part of it albeit temporarily.
You have to make sure that you have booked your holiday apartment in advance. These accommodations are very popular in Europe for the abovementioned reasons and, hence, can quickly be fully-booked.
Convents
Catholic convents and monasteries do offer safe haven for weary travelers in Europe, a tradition believed to have started with Saint Benedict. Today, the countries with the most convents offering this type of service are Italy, Spain and France.
Take note that the convent rooms are simply furnished in accordance with the Christian virtue of simple living. As such, expect only a clean bed with clean beddings, a table and chair and maybe a small closet. Modern conveniences like television, stereo, Internet connections and even phones are nowhere to be seen. Also, convents only accept cash payments either as a fixed rate or as a donation. Try to be as generous as possible with the convent.
Hostels and Hotels
As any traveler knows, there is a world of difference between hostels and hotels. The former usually offers the most basic of lodging accommodations, with many people sleeping in bunk beds in one room alone. The bathroom is usually situated down the hall, with towels and beddings included in the bed rate.
The latter, however, are more luxurious, in a manner of speaking. The beds are usually confined to just 1-2 in a room with more amenities like ensuite bathrooms, Internet connection, entertainment options and even a mini-bar included in the room rate. As can be expected, you will be more comfortable and safe in a hotel but your pockets may also take a beating.
These then are the options of holiday accommodation in Europe. Be sure to bring along your euros and international credit cards to pay for your second home.
